What is a QR code and how does it work? QR codes are two-dimensional barcodes that can be read by cameras and smartphones with an app. They were originally used in the telecom industry to speed up the process of finding a phone number in a database, but now they serve as a universal way to share information quickly.

They resemble a cross between a barcode and television snow/static, and they’re one of the most under-utilized, low-cost marketing techniques available, in my view.

What the hell is it, anyway?

The mobile barcode, often known as the QR code, is a matrix barcode made consisting of black modules organized in a square pattern on a white backdrop, according to Wikipedia. Text, URLs, and other types of data may be encoded. The abbreviation “QR” stands for “rapid reaction.”

You’ll need to download an app on your phone to read a QR code. (You don’t need an app since newer phones have built-in QR Code readers.) The phone reads the matrix barcode and takes you to a webpage, display text, or email/text message. It seems to have a lot of promise and is very popular in Japan, but it has yet to gain traction in the United States. Despite this, we’re seeing an increasing number of these amusing matrix boxes in magazine advertisements and on websites.

What can you do with it?

QR codes may be used in a variety of ways by service businesses: 1. Directly connect to a lead generating tool, such as a white paper or a free report. 2. To offer a direct link to a brochure (PDF) in order to save money on printing. 3. To assist in the “viralization” of a video 4. Include a “contact” QR code on the back of your business card so that people may add you to their phone contacts instantly.

5. Retailers may use QR codes to extend their advertising – there’s only so much space on a page/billboard — and to provide unique deals to those who know how to use them — insider discounts, invitations to in-store events, and so on.

A QR code may be used by anybody to monitor a marketing or advertising campaign.
