On the 37signals.com site, there’s an intriguing conversation regarding a Nike ad that uses a song by activist, poet, and musician Saul Williams. The song “List of Demands” was utilized to help promote their newest product/idea/brand.

For a long time, the phrase “selling out” has been used. The following is a definition from Wikipedia (the stronghold of accuracy): Selling out is defined as surrendering one’s integrity, morals, and values for the sake of money, “success,” or other personal gain.

I suppose I have an issue with this phrase in general. Why should musicians, photographers, painters, writers, and other artists be forced to choose between anonymity and exposure? Why are they mocked for wanting to generate enough money to support their artistic endeavors?

I first became aware of several of my favorite musicians after hearing them on a commercial or in a film. This, I suppose, qualifies me as a strong supporter of sellouts.

As a company, you promote your product and do all you can to get your name out there. You put commercials and advertisements to create the most potential impact. You do all in your power to enlighten individuals on why they should do business with your firm.

So, what distinguishes a painter, photographer, or composer from your neighborhood coffee shop or… Nike?

“I got a lot of inquiries from certain people about why I would let my song ‘List of Demands’ to be used in a Nike ad,” Williams explains. Ironically, before that advertisement aired, half of the people reading this page had never heard of me. That was, in fact, one of my justifications for accepting it.”

Despite the fact that I am not a major fan of Williams’ music, I thought the music and the commercial to be engaging when they were combined. And kudos to him for figuring out a means to get his message out to a bigger audience.

That is excellent marketing and business practice.
