I just reached out to Mark Gregory, the Oregon Small Business Development Center Network’s new Associate State Director, to see if he’d be able to share some of the OSBDCN’s success stories and information on the excellent job the OSBDCN is doing in Oregon:
The Oregon Small Business Development Center Network (OSBDCN) has offered one-on-one counseling to approximately 135,000 existing and potential companies since its establishment in 1983. Over 500,000 people have participated in OSBDCN training events. Professional licensed business counselors offer counseling to company owners at no expense to them.
Small business formation births had a greater effect on gross state product (GSP), state personal income (SPI), and total state employment than any other factor studied, according to a report released in 2007 by the US Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy. The main result indicates that when the net small business establishment birth rate is positive, economic development will be quicker. They find that governmental initiatives to encourage small company creation are more effective than almost any other policy choice in terms of creating economic growth.
In 2008, the OSBDCN provided counseling to 5,782 individuals throughout the state. Pre-venture entrepreneurs made up 44% of these customers, who were working on their company ideas and raising start-up funding. Sixty-six percent (3,238) started their companies, with the majority (2,240) employing 0 to five people. There were 458 companies with 5-50 workers and 14 firms with 50-500 employees among the remaining customers. OSBDCN customers received $48,156,140 in loan and equity financing in 2008, launching 372 new companies and increasing revenues by $44,280,331.
