How I Got My First Customer: I Networked From the Very Start

When I first started my business, I didn’t know what to do. So I did what any entrepreneur would do-I networked. Networking is the most important part of building a business, and it’s often overlooked by entrepreneurs.

I got my first customer in the very beginning. It was a friend of mine who introduced me to her friend, and then that person became my first customer. From there, it was easy to get more customers because I had already built up a network. Read more in detail here: how to get your first 100 customers.

This is part of Bplans’ “How I Did It” series, which tells the actual tales of real companies starting out, overcoming obstacles, and succeeding. Here’s the link to the previous article.

Website Design by Alan at NewMedia:

Alan Canton“We chose to work for free when we first launched NewMedia Website Design… That is, we want to create some free websites for important individuals in the book industry as well as folks we’ve known for a long time.

“We created this for Dan Poynter (who ‘invented’ the tiny press!) and he complimented us on it, so that got us started.”

Alan Canton is the owner of NewMedia Website Design, a company that provides professional website design services in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Mike from Born To Sell says:

Mike Scanlin Born To Sell“On our first day, we had over 100 customers. This was made feasible since we befriended the owner and editor of the most important blog in our field throughout development. We received the advantage of introducing our new company/product on his blog by integrating an expert into our design process early on.

“Lesson learned: Get early design input from individuals you’ll subsequently seek for testimonials and/or marketing assistance to help spread the word. Get them involved early so that when you ask them to mention it later, they will answer yes.”

Mike Scanlin is the founder of Born To Sell, a website devoted to assisting investors in generating additional monthly income from their stock holdings via the use of a “covered call screener.” Mike has worked as a venture investor, an investment banker, and a software developer in the past.
