It’s been years now since Amazon bought MGM for $8.45 billion, but subscribers have barely seen any of the fruits of that deal up to now. When the company splashed cash on the Hollywood studio, it took over the rights to some major franchises, and many new entries are in development.
One of the most exciting prospects is RoboCop, as there are so many directions that Amazon Prime Video could go in with the sci-fi universe. It has been confirmed that a series is in the works with Dan Stevens set to star in the iconic title role, but there has been no news yet about a release date.

Series Confirmed at Amazon
After years of speculation about whether Amazon would make a series or a movie for RoboCop first, it has been confirmed that it’s prioritizing a series. The eight-episode season is reportedly going to capture the anti-corporate vibe of the 1987 original, and Peter Ocko is serving as the head writer and showrunner. There are other big names involved, including James Wan as a producer and director of some key episodes.
Stevens has landed the role of Alex Murphy, the policeman who gets seriously injured before becoming RoboCop. It’s not confirmed as to whether it will show this part of the backstory, though, or whether he will already exist as the crime-fighting cyborg in the show. Production is scheduled to start in January 2027, so it feels like everything is finally falling into place for this show to get off the ground.

RoboCop Could Be a Huge Franchise for Amazon
Stevens is likely to hope that he’ll serve in this role for multiple seasons of the series as well as potential spinoffs. As a huge IP, there’s a chance that Amazon will try to expand RoboCop in other ways, including universe-expanding movies and games.
RoboCop has already proven that it can excel as a franchise, with the original film leading to numerous sequels and reboots over the years. The franchise also has many games, with the first coming out in 1988, soon after the original film. Modern audiences may have already interacted with the franchise through other types of games such as the Great Britain casino slot game, RoboCop: Cash Collect. All these offerings help to give Amazon’s franchise a ready-made audience.
What Else is Stevens Currently Working On?
Stevens is hot property in show business right now and has various other projects that he’s working on. The actor who rose to fame in Downton Abbey is taking on the role of a serial killer in the second season of Dexter: Resurrection this year. In film, he’s also set to appear in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova in 2027.
